You can stimulate flow (decongest) if applied properly, or you can create blockages (lymphedema /lymphostasis) which would be a rather unfortunate occurrence and should be avoided. However, if LE or lymphostasis is present, it is helpful to know how to apply simple techniques to ease that problem. Message from Alvina Quatrano
CE Provider Alvina Quatrano has recently received her National Provider Certification and, if you can use national credits, she extends the courtesy of using them. For those who attended her Chakra Tai Chi class on 11/16/09 and her Enneagram class on 2/15/10 just write her NCBTMB Provider No. 451544-11 on the certificate you received at that meeting. You can use this number on any of her classes within the last two years for retroactive credit with NCBTMB.

Nelson is still a member of FSMTA, now living in Texas. He reads our newsletters and enjoys staying informed. He writes to ask, "Would it be possible to make an announcement to all the members who have a Linkedin account if they can help me?. I'm sending this to ask anyone who knows me personally for a brief recommendation of my work that I can include in my LinkedIn profile. The information can only be placed if someone has a Linkedin account. Hello to everyone, and THANK YOU for your help. Nelson"

Volunteers Being Sought
The Chapter is growing and has a really good energy this year. It is looking for volunteers in several departments. We will keep this in front of your eyes in hopes of inspiring you. The chapter needs: (2) A Convention Chairperson who will head up our chapter's involvement at the FSMTA State Convention in June in Orlando. You take charge of organizing who does what from our chapter, and you get a free convention package in return. Can get creative. (2) A Chair Massage Chairperson who will take charge of recruiting, organizing and maintaining a list of volunteers who will work various events, and keep track of what public events need a chair massage team. Put your creativity to work.  (3) A Membership Chairperson who will take the responsibility for sending letters of welcome to new members, warning letters to expiring members, keep track of statistics and find ways to improve membership by implementing new ideas. (4) A Florida Chiropractor Convention Chairperson who will work hand-in-hand with the state Chiropractic Association which holds its convention in Naples every year, smack dap in our own back yard so the responsibiity lies with us to provide the massage fact for the Chiros. Lots of room for creative ideas here. If you are interested in any of the above, contact one of the officers shown on the ABOUT US page.

PIP Report from Vivian Mahoney
(Vivian Mahoney is FSMTA's State Insurance Committee Chairperson and gives workshops on insurance billing. This is a message to Lynn Hupp in her usual candid manner. Thought you might like to see it.)

Hi Lynn, please pass this on to all and Joanna. So sorry it took me a bit to get back to you and all who are concerned. I spent 5 hours yesterday doing a presentation and having lunch and discussions with the group in Lakeland, including FBI, Fraud Investigators, Undercover agents, Police Investigators as well as Hillsborough County Attorney and the State Attorney's assistant and Assistant to the Attorney General. (I think I have that all right).

I was the only presenter there with the exception of the Hillsborough County Attorney who spoke first about the situation there regarding the County trying to pass a special PIP Medical Clinic Ordinance. He assured us that there was nothing to worry about unless the medical provider is involved in running pip mills, so called clinics, owned by or financed by other than the licensed provider and made to look like the medical provider is the one who has put it all together.

It is way too much info to write here in the email as I am traveling on rough bumpy roads, and in mountains as we get close to home. But suffice it to say DO NOT WORRY for now. I WILL KEEP all posted on this and the rest of the info from that meeting. (IF THEY READ MY EMAILS)!!! They have postponed that meeting until some time mid March and they also realize that this will not be an easy task as medical providers and others are coming out of the woodwork to fight it.

The bottom line, at the Board Meeting, I will explain more (and in email notices) what our Association/profession might need to do to protect us from having our hard-earned great reputation being drug down in this very serious, criminal activity with all the negative ramifications.

I kidded the FBI agents over lunch, saying first we had to fight the image of prostitution, now we are fighting the image of criminals. They had a good laugh over that.
More later!!!!

Attending:
Sherrie Easterly, President
Teo Nikolov, 1st Vice President
John Graham, 2nd Vice President
Robyn Berry, Treasurer
Judy Johnson, Secretary
Terry Lowder, Immediate Past President, Education Chair
Sydney Scheaffer, By-laws Chair

The FSMTA-SW Chapter Board Meeting was called to order at 6:27 PM by President Sherrie Easterly. Sydney Scheaffer moved and John Graham seconded to accept the Board minutes of the January 20, 2011 meeting. It was brought up a correction to the minutes has been made regarding a referenced date.

There was animated discussion regarding buying a used easel from Terry Lowder and how we might take advantage of using this item. John Graham moved and Judy Johnson seconded the motion to review the condition of the easel, and to purchase it if it is in good condition, at half of the suggested retail value for this item. John Graham will retain control of the easel to be brought to meetings. Some suggested uses were at sporting events to announce who we are, at meetings, to post rules and notices at the meetings, to take to meeting places that do not have white boards, etc.

Robyn Berry presented the proposed 2011 – 2012 budget information as sources of income or expenditures. The entire Board participated in determining funding and income levels based on projected revenue for the 2011 budget year. The Board unanimously chose [to]  discuss each item and offer suggestions for the next budget.

Our income comes from 4 primary source: Membership dues, Sponsors, Fund raising and fees for CEU credits. The expenses and categories are clearly cataloged in the state Policies and Procedures Handbook.

We were able to agree to Robyn completing the balancing of the budget when all of the available information arrives. She will forward copies to all Board members by March 1, 2011. We will present the completed budget to the membership on March 1, 2011 and forward the approved budget to state headquarters.

There was a discussion regarding Nancy Wilson continuing the function of maintaining the FSMTA-SW website. Nancy will present a report defining the various jobs that she does to the Board at the March 17 Board meeting. She will be itemizing the various tasks she currently performs as well as the cross-over tasks that are necessary to be done concurrently. This has been a huge job and everyone acknowledged the great look and content of the website. Many thanks to Nancy Wilson and Debra Ziebell.

The Board also recognized the need to ask the membership to have someone step up and volunteer to become Membership Chair.

It was moved by Robyn Berry and seconded by Teo Nikolov to discuss sponsorship, membership and advertisement as it relates to the website at the next Board meeting. There is a need to clarify policies for advertising on the website and figure out how to account for everything.

Sherrie Easterly asked if everyone had completed their business cards and name tag information and sent it to Lynn Hupp. Everyone is responsible for getting their information to Lynn.

Ron Stephens gave a report on meetings he had had in reference to Massage Awareness Week. The Best Western in San Carlos has new owners. Warm Mineral Springs recently sold and we will probably not use it in the future. He also reported on the current bills in the legislature and the need to contact our representatives regarding the bills FSMTA is supporting and not supporting.

There was discussion regarding the PIP memo that was sent out targeting massage therapists in Hillsboro County.

Sherrie Easterly reported that Maureen Gilbert sent Valentines good wishes to the Chapters. She also asked who wanted to receive the other Chapters newsletters and Ron and Judy both expressed a desire to receive them.

State and Chapter nominations were discussed. No one received any recommendations from the membership regarding the awards. Ron Stephens was nominated at the state level for Outstanding Service Award. Nancy Wilson is preparing the paperwork and will forward it directly to Lynn when ready.

The Board recommended the following Chapter award candidates:
Sports – Sydney Scheaffer
LMT of the year – Dolores Gozzi
Outstanding Service – Nancy Wilson

Sherrie very kindly recognized all of her staff with small tokens of appreciation and to symbolize our new Board duties. She then gave Sydney, Terry and Ron small flashlights and they were to symbolize “Shine bright and show the way”. To Robyn she gave a red pen and eraser to symbolize “Keep us within budget and out of the red”. Nancy received a pen to “ Let everyone know, journal away”. Sherrie gave Judy a journal and pencil to “Keep a record of all we do”. Teo and John got notebooks and a pen to take notes because ”they are in training to take over in the future”.

There was an unresolved discussion regarding generating income from CEU’s and other ways to generate income in general.

There was discussion on on-line education.

There was a discussion regarding anyone representing FSMTA Sports Massage needing to be certified. Lynn Hupp has the list of certified members. Teo was going to get the list from Lynn.

There was a discussion about asking Karen Ford to give us an update from the BOMT at the beginning of every business meeting. It is a great honor to have her in our Chapter and she can keep us informed about how we can help.

A spirited discussion on explaining to the members how they can get involved and help. Also to show them the resources we have in the Chapter and explain how they are integrated at the state level. We need additional help with the website and specific tasks.

Ron Stephens gave some information on the state insurance program for LMT’s and thinks we should let the membership know what benefits are available to them.

There was a reminder to talk slower and give the members a chance to hear what we are saying when we talk at the meetings. Good advice to remember. People want to understand what we are asking and saying.

Terry Lowder gave a report about getting a June speaker scheduled. We want to remember to keep booking ahead not just stopping because we have the calendar year filled in. Let’s be thinking ahead. He also talked about the March CEU presentation on bamboo fusion.

Sydney Scheaffer is going to talk to Aaron Mattes regarding helping us with a fund raiser or teaching a CEU class in the future. It was acknowledged that Aaron is trying to slow down his schedule a bit.

There was discussion about any member can make a brief announcement at the meeting when the President asks if there is “any business pertinent to the group”. We may try to keep the announcements to 3 minutes.

There was a discussion on remembering to turn off cell phones during the meeting and CEU presentation, and another penalty if you answer it in the meeting. We discussed and agreed to take it to the members and suggest we start after state convention. The proposal was $1.00 for an audible tone/ring and $5.00 if you answered it during the meeting.

This prompted a discussion on forgetting your membership card and having to have it looked up at the time of signing in. We discussed having a $5.00 entry fee to the meeting that is waived if they have their card. The sign-in process is challenging when people forget to bring their cards. Duplicate cards can be obtained from Laura at state headquarters.

We then had a discussion on putting the rules on the white board when people enter. We want to make this a fun way to get the members to be responsible for carrying their cards with them and being respectful during the meeting.

Sherrie Easterly asked Judy Johnson to develop a chart of how many members attend each meeting by month.

Sherrie also asked Terry Lowder if he had any special projects he wanted carried forward. He will get back to her.

There was discussion on the Senior Games in Gainesville and Teo Nikolov is following up with getting the information. There was discussion on the Tampa Fair chair massage program and Judy Johnson said she would try to obtain the information on setting up the program for seated chair massage at the fair.

Sydney Scheaffer moved and Nancy Wilson seconded a motion to adjourn the meeting at 9:08. The meeting was adjourned at 9:09PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Where to send news for website posting
