Business Meeting
February 2011 FSMTA-SW Chapter meeting was called to order by President Sherrie Easterly at 6:30 PM, with 73 members attending. The President welcomed everyone and showed an example of our new identification cards for 2011. She asked for nominations for the upcoming Chapter and State awards for LMT, Sports and Chapter Service Awards which have been requested by Central FSMTA Headquarters on March 1st. She discussed the upcoming state convention in June and requested a volunteer to help develop something unique to help identify our Chapter during the convention. Ideas included a pin, t-shirt, hat or item to hand-out. President Sherrie also reported they were still looking any one interested in working with Karl Skool and the next SW Chiropractic Association Convention.
Board Member Reports
1st Vice President, Teo Nikolov thanked Nancy Wilson and Debra Ziebell for their work on the website and encouraged everyone to check the site out. There are still questions regarding content and what can be advertised on the site which is being worked out with Headquarters. He also reported on the success of the Sports Team’s work at the Naples half marathon in January.
2nd Vice President, John Graham thanked the membership for their attendance and those members that attended the recent State FSMTA quarterly meeting in Orlando. He reported on the 1,606 massage therapists in our area; with 996 in Lee County, 15 in Hendry County and 590 in Collier County. This is a great source for new members to the Chapter, and encouraged everyone to help non-members see the value of joining our organization.
Treasurer, C. Robyn Berry was unable to give a complete financial report except to state the balance in the checking account at the end of January was $5,552.47. There is soon to be a migration at the state level of our checking account from Bank of America to Wachovia. She will keep everyone posted. She also reported the Chapter has a new sponsor, Kandy Love, at Health and Harmony Center, 15951 McGregor Blvd., Ft. Meyers, Fl. 33908.
Secretary, Judy Johnson reported the meeting minutes would be posted on our website. This included both Board and Chapter minutes.
By-laws committee Chairman, Sydney Scheaffer thanked the new board for their work and attendance at the FSMTA January state quarterly meeting.
Sports committee Chairman Michael Schmetterer thanked the sports team members who worked the January half marathon in Naples and requested anyone interested in participating in future events contact him. There was an acknowledgement of the great work that Nancy Wilson and Debra Ziebell have done with our website. Everyone should check it out and see the vast amount of information available for us. They welcome comments and ideas to help keep the site fresh and meaningful to the members.
Karen Ford, Chapter member & Chairman of the State BOMT, gave the membership some information regarding Florida House bill 49 (HB 49) and Senate bill 584 (SB 584). This is proposed legislation that would allow newly graduated therapists to work, under a monitor, prior to obtaining a license. She read a statement, from the Board of Massage against these bills. The Board of Massage does not support this legislation and is requesting members to send letters to their representatives. She also reported on a human trafficking bill that is being proposed.
Evening Presentation
At 7:00 PM, Janice Jackson introduced the evening CEU provider, Dr. Doreste.
Dr. Doreste then presented Cranial Release Techniques (CRT) to the membership. Check out his website at: www.cranialrelease.com for additional information. Debra Ziebell was the lucky recipient of a treatment from Dr. Doreste.

Absent: Teo Nikolov, 1st Vice President

The FSMTA-SW Chapter Board Meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by President Sherrie Easterly.
Nancy Wilson moved to accept the January 20th Board Meeting minutes and Ron Stephens seconded the motion. The January 20, 2011 Board minutes were approved as written.
Terry Lowder presented the Chapter’s 2011 CEU Presenters list. There was discussion about offering a CEU presentation at the June 7th meeting and Terry will be following up on that. He requests any potential CE presenter forward him a biographical resume and a course outline of the proposed presentation. There was discussion on different special events that could be held such as a massage exchange among members.
There was discussion on keeping the Officer’s FSMTA books updated and ensuring they are accurate before we pass them on to the next officers. Sydney Sheaffer will keep a record of any new amendments pertaining to By-laws and Judy Johnson will ensure the books are in proper order before the next exchange.
Terry will get Sherrie a copy of the report that Frank Ansel, FSMTA State Treasurer, did for the Tampa Bay Chapter regarding monthly expenditures. Sherrie would like the previous months expenditures and the current financial information presented for discussion at each Board meeting.
There was discussion on this year’s state convention and determining possible reimbursement strategies for the Chapter for members who are attending. No specific resolution was determined, but we will discuss this at a future Board meeting.
There was also a discussion on inviting all 1,606 LMT’s (members and non-members), in the three counties that comprise the FSMTA-SW Chapter, to our mandatory classes in April, May and July. This discussion included how to notify them (the non-members) and how to get them signed up as members. A sub-committee was formed to discuss specifics and develop a mailer (postcard) that might be sent out. The committee included: Ron Stephens, Nancy Wilson, Debra Ziebell and Terry Lowder.
Ron Stephens reported that he and John Graham, have agreed to chair the Massage Therapy Awareness Week (MTAW) Committee. Last year was a great success at Warm Mineral Springs and they are developing proposals to potentially work at the Bonita Flea Market this year.
As a point of clarification, our FSMTA-SW Chapter Annual Board meeting was held on December 6, 2010, when we installed the new officers.
Judy Johnson reported she was going to be in Tampa in the near future and would connect with the President of the Tampa Bay Chapter regarding what they were doing with chair massage at the state fair.
There was a discussion on teaming up with the Sarasota Chapter of FSMTA at the state convention. We discussed items such as pins, budgets and themes for the annual convention. We will ask the membership if anyone would like to volunteer to chair this committee. There was also the acknowledgement that our chapter was responsible for sponsoring Bruce Hamm at the convention and that included helping with the cost of accommodations, possibly secretarial support and/or other miscellaneous tasks.
Our Chapter’s annual awards are due to the state by March 1st. There are two levels of awards. The Chapter level and the State level. The Board will request and accept nominations at the February 1st Chapter meeting and the Board will vote on our nominees at the February Board meeting (February 17). The state awards are for: Sports, LMT of the Year, Chapter Service, and Sports Massage Team Member. The Chapter awards include: LMT of the Year, Chapter Service and Sports Massage.
Sherrie passed out section 5.8 of the By-laws which specified which minutes get posted on our website. Both the Board meeting and Chapter minutes will be posted after review and acceptance.
There was a discussion regarding the membership committee going to the various schools in our counties to discuss the benefits to membership into FSMTA and specifically into our Chapter. Possibly splitting up the various schools so one person was not overwhelmed was proposed. More discussion will be forthcoming on this item.
Ron Stephens gave a report on the Legislative Awareness Week. His committee: Lora Meyer, Loren Jump and Judy Johnson will be meeting with the local legislators and promoting massage and massage related legislation that is currently under discussion. We need to make an appointment and Ron will alert the committee when we can talk to our legislators.
There was discussion regarding the Florida Chiropractic Association and our participation with this organization. The Board is currently looking for someone who would like to chair this particular committee.
The question was asked if anyone was aware of any provider who had not posted their CEU’s to CE Provider. No one was aware of any delays in postings.
Sherrie requested anyone who sends in an article to Massage Message, makes sure to identify any photos separately when making a submittal. The photo spread was excellent for the Warm Mineral Springs event for Massage Therapy Awareness Week that Nancy submitted.
Bank account background information cards were passed out for changing banks from Bank of America to Wachovia Bank. These need to be submitted to Lynn Hupp at state office as soon as possible. It is not certain these are the final signature cards but we will get more direction from state headquarters central office before the switch.
There was discussion of the Board meeting dates. It was determined the Chapter meetings are the first Tuesday of every month and the Board meeting would be on the third Thursday of every month. In 2011, the Board will meet: Feb. 17, March 17, April 21, May 19, June 23 (at state convention), July 21, Aug. 18, Sept 15, Oct 20, Nov 17 and Dec 15.
We are trying to develop a 12 month schedule of reoccurring events, such as sporting events, opportunities to promote massage, Board and Chapter meetings, etc. Please forward any of these dates to Judy and we will include them on our master list. We want the members to be aware of opportunities in the area where they might want to participate.
Sherrie and Judy volunteered to reschedule the Board meeting room for the newly approved evening meetings upon leaving the meeting.
Sydney Sheaffer moved and Terry Lowder seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Judy Johnson

How to become a sponsor
The cost is $100 a year to be listed as a sponsor on this website (see Sponsor page) and also listed in this newsletter every month. Have your website linked to ours. In addition sponsors are invited to publish one article a year. Contact nancy@massagebynancy.com. If you do not have a website, you may take out a short-term ad, such as 30-day, 60-day or 90-day ad for $30 a month, or $100 a year. Send check to Nancy Wilson, 616 Sanctuary Road, Naples, FL 34120-4837.
Where to send news for website posting
To help our chapter become more user-friendly, we ask all members to be journalists and report what you know. Write to us. Send news to us. If you have photos to post in the photo gallery, send them in .jpg format to info@fsmtasw.org. If you know a sports event coming up, send date and details. Other members want to know what's happening. The exception is: We do not list classes or workshops since we do not want to undercut our sponsors who pay for their promotion. But other news is valuable. If in doubt, just ask.

FSMTA-SW Chapter Secretary

Where to send news for website posting
To help our chapter become more user-friendly, we ask all members to be journalists and report what you know. Write to us. Send news to us. If you have photos to post in the photo gallery, send them in .jpg format to info@fsmtasw.org. If you know a sports event coming up, send date and details. Other members want to know what's happening. The exception is: We do not list classes or workshops since we do not want to undercut our sponsors who pay for their promotion. But other news is valuable. If in doubt, just ask.
From the Officers of FSMTA Southwest FL Chapter!
