FSMTA Southwest Chapter
Meeting Monday, February 15, 2010 - Alvina Quatrano,
"Enneagram"
New Meeting Location

Gulf Coast Town Center, Ft. Myers (Exit 128)
Mon., February 15, 2010, Chapter Meeting - Enneagram
Alvina Quatrano will introduce the Ennegram, an ancient Sufi
teaching that describes nine different personality types and their
interrelationships. This is a fun interactive workshop including a
multiple choice personal quiz to help decipher your own Enneagram
"type". She will show a video and dynamically illustrate the
Enneagram, a system of personality typing which enlightens aspects
you might not have considered, helping to understand your own
motivations and the core needs of others. Helps group cohesion and
deconflict groups and individual differences. This is an ancient
system originating from monasteries and developed by Gurdjiev
(Persia) and more recently Oscar Ichazo (Hawaii), Helen Palmer
(Stanford University), and Don Riso and Russ Hudson (New York)
among others. Learn what makes your colleagues, family members
tick. Realize we’re not all the same--they’re not like
you!! Two CEUs. See Ms. Quatrano's website for more details:
www.holistichealingarts.info
.
Meeting Location
The meeting will take place at the Bass Pro Shop, Gulf Coast Town
Center, Ft. Myers, just off I-75 at Exit 128, Alico Road.
Directions: I-75 to Exit 128 (Alico Road). Go east on Alico a half
mile, then right into Gulf Coast Town Center, and right again.
You'll see the large sign "Outdoor World" down back on the right,
with a smaller sign "Bass Pro Shops" above it. Walk through the
store (it's huge) all the way to the back where the elevators are
located. Go to the second floor and turn right off the elevator.
Walk through the forest of camouflage clothing to the far right
wall. Doors open at 5:30 pm, business meeting from 6 to 7 pm,
presentation from 7 to 9 pm. No snacks in the conference room so
eat before you arrive. There are many restaurants in the Gulf Coast
Town Center, including the Islamorada Fish Company accessed from
inside the store.
Show your membership card and be on time!
There will be door checkers at this meeting to see your membership
card before you sign-in, to make sure you are current. So be sure
to have your membership card handy. Not your license, but your
FSMTA membership card. Someone will be just inside the door to
remind you to get it out. Someone will be there to look at the date
before you reach sign-in. Please do not panic if you have lost your
card. There will be a list of current members on site, so you can
be validated. But it takes too long to check 50 or 60 members. Your
card is your ticket to get into the meeting, just like at the movie
theater. And remember to be on time. There's a shaping-up process
going in all chapters of FSMTA. In accordance with CEU guidelines,
anyone arriving more than 15 minutes late to a meeting will NOT
receive credit for the CEUs being offered that night. The sign-in
sheet will be put away at 7:16 pm. Because this newsletter is going
to expired members as well as current members (to try to entice
them back) if you have expired and want to renew at this meeting
you may do so. Bring $125 ($140 if you have already expired) either
check or cash and fill out the membership form. You will get credit
for the presentation.
Gator Stomp & Swamp Cabbage Festival - Feb 27 & 28,
2010
LMTs are needed for the annual Gator Stomp and Swamp Cabbage
Festival in Labelle over the weekend of February 27 and 28, 2010.
This annual get-together happens on the last weekend of February
every year. The Gator Stomp is a 5K run in the morning and then the
Swamp Cabbage Festival in the afternoon really close to 2nd VP
Sherrie Easterly's office in Labelle. Traditionally the LMTs use
tables for the runners, chairs for the festival-goers. They set up
their chairs on the sidewalk in front of Sherrie's office, right
across the street from the festival - a perfect location. The going
rate is $1 a minute. If you'd like to join the fun and earn a
little money, call Mic for more details. Michael (Mic) Schmetterer,
239-560-9430 or email goodhealthforall@ymail.com. But he would
rather you telephoned. He's not good on the keyboard.
Welcome New Members who joined in January 2010
We are glad to have all of you new members who've recently joined
the Southwest Chapter of FSMTA. We are an active group of
volunteers who enjoy getting together each month. Please come to
the February 15th meeting. Introduce yourself to Sherrie at the
sign-in desk so we can introduce you and take a group picture of
new members.

Bruce Ham Returns from Austria Qi Renewal Seminar
Sat., Mar. 20th • 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. by Master Bruce
Chongman Ham
LMT and FSMTA member Bruce Ham, age 35, from Seoul, South Korea, is
martial arts-trained from age 10. He learned Shiatsu from the age
of 13, to relieve pain from competition for himself and others.
Later he earned a PhD in Holistic Health and has been an LMT for
the past 16 years. He also has training in Feng Shui which is not
just placement of furniture, but the art of analyzing individual
energy. Bruce has been teaching in Germany and has had a practice
in Austria for the past 16 months. Prior to that he had a practice
in Naples, where he was active in our Southwest Chapter, presenting
Qi Gong energy workshops. He explains Qi as when I-75 gets too busy
and everything slows down, that's what happens to meridians in the
body. You need more energy if you're going to work on others, he
says. Therapists hurt themselves because they don't recharge. He
teaches how to feel energy. The Qi Renewal seminar teaches
techniques to open and activate your energy. How to open the
different levels of the energy field. It will enhance the effects
of other therapies such as energy work, acupuncture, massage and
yoga. You will gain the knowledge of Hara. These techniques will
benefit the relief of symptoms like headache, neck and back pain,
anxiety, fatigue and scar tissues. You will learn how to protect
yourself while performing therapeutic work. The Qi Renewal
techniques work on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. The
workshop takes place at the PB Light Center on Heritage Trail,
located off Davis Boulevard in East Naples between Airport Rd and
County Barn. To register, call 571-3509 or pblightcenter@gmail.com.
Cost is $150 with organic lunch included. Register in advance for
seating is limited.
Article From Sponsor Cindy Black
Integrating Acupressure into Massage Sessions
I learned a little Shiatsu (Japanese form of acupressure) in my
beginning Massage Therapy training. I almost dropped out of massage
school to pursue Shiatsu as I was so moved by the work! Alas, I
reigned myself in and completed my Massage Therapy certification
course. As a beginning Massage Therapist in 1991, I landed a job
with a local Chiropractor. Being limited to just 10 or 15 minutes
per treatment, I found that using acupressure points was extremely
effective for releasing neck, shoulder and jaw pain. That
experience stayed with me as I continued to expand my practice and
learn new hands-on techniques.
I took a leap a few years ago and went to school for Chinese
Medicine, following my desire to understand more about Qi, the
cycles of Nature, the cycles of human health and illness. Even
though I was learning about acupuncture and herbs, I kept applying
what I was learning to massage. In the system of Chinese Medicine,
massage is one method of treatment, along with acupuncture,
herbs,
movement, meditation and diet. Applying the principles of Chinese
Medicine to the practice of massage has awakened my creativity and
improved my hands-on work.
Acupressure is a simple method of applying a variety of different
types of pressure to the acupuncture points. The acupuncture points
are located along the meridians of the body, which is where the Qi
(life force) flows. By influencing these points, we can support the
Qi to re-balance. Stuck or stagnant Qi in the muscles leads to the
sensation of pain, tension and restricted motion. Balanced Qi is
flowing, giving vitality and suppleness to the body.
Combining acupressure and massage therapy is a very effective means
of opening the meridians and encouraging the Qi to flow. Regardless
of the type of massage I may be giving, I always focus on the
meridians and points to accentuate my work. Because the medians
flow throughout the body, using acupressure is an excellent method
of affecting areas contraindicated to direct pressure by using
distal points. The combination of massage and acupressure revives
the flow of blood as well as the flow of
energy (Qi) - a potent combination for healing.
Although there are over 300 acupuncture points, treating just a few
of the main points during a session is enough to experience
positive results. For instance, if a client is experiencing
abdominal tension and/or stomach upset, applying pressure to the
point Stomach 36 can help alleviate the gastric symptoms, as well
as general tension in the abdomen. After applying pressure to
Stomach 36, go back and massage the abdominal area and you will
likely notice that it is now comfortable for your client to
allow you to massage their abdomen. Stomach 36 is located about a
thumb width's lateral to the tibial tuberosity. Try finding it on
yourself first, then experiment with your clients!
I am excited to be offering an Acupressure Fundamentals class in
Ft. Myers on Feb 26 & 27 where I will be sharing more about
integrating acupressure into massage sessions. Since the class is
full of hands-on practice, your Qi will likely become balanced
while you learn a great new technique and get 12 of your CEU's
completed early! $50 off for FSMTA members who register by Feb. 1,
2010.
(Cindy Black, L.Ac., LMT, will be at the Chapter meeting April 19,
2010 to talk about the Immune System. She has been practicing and
teaching Massage Therapy since 1991. For more information on the

New Officers Elected to Southwest Florida Board
The Board held a special meeting at the end of January to elect
replacements for three officers who resigned. The 1st Vice
President's position, left vacant by the resignation of Dolores
Gozzi, was filled by Sydney Sheaffer, a former president of our
chapter. The Treasurer's position, left vacant by resignation of
Betsy Andreini, was filled by C. Robyn Berry. The Secretary's
position, left vacant by the resignation of Rita Ellis, was filled
by new member Loren Smith. The Board is now complete. The current
officers are as follows:
-
Terry Lowder, President -

Thank you, Sydney, Robyn and Loren for stepping forward to serve.
We are grateful for your willingness to give time and energy for
what needs to be done. We also give gratitude and thanks, once
again, to Dolores, Betsy and Rita who put many hours into their
roles during 2009. You have prepared the way for this new group to
be in place. We appreciate your pioneering efforts. We wish you a
big sigh of relief as you step down and resume your normal
life.
And more people in the news....

Massage Items For Sale in Estate of Ray Thaggard
Member Ray Thaggard who passed on January 11, 2010 has left behind
two Master massage tables (Costco), used, in good condition; a
hydrocolator, bolsters and sheets and an ultrasound machine. Mrs.
Thaggard wishes to sell them to his fellow therapists. There is no
better place for them to go. Call Michael (Mic) Schmetterer at
239-560-9430 to make arrangements.
End-of-Life Transition Teams Planned by LMTs
When member Ray Thaggard had a stroke last month at age 78 (he'd
have been 79 on January 29) several of our members went to Hospice
to visit him and give him some hands-on, loving TLC. The next day
Ray passed over. Member LMT Dolores Gozzi who works at Hospice said
Ray died peacefully, with a serene countenance on his face. She
added that she's seen many people die, and they don't all die
happy. This incident has had a deep impact on those of us who knew
Ray. He was a colorful personality with a funny hat and big bushy
eyebrows, who was unafraid to speak his mind. Earning his license
in his 70's after a lifetime of driving truck, he was eager for
instruction and used Sydney as his mentor. I can vouch for his
rough fingers turning soft over the few years that he practiced
massage. It was with Ray in mind that the Board at its last meeting
decided to start a transition team to help those on their death bed
or in dire near-death situations, to help with the transition.
Treasurer Robyn Berry is the new Member Services committee chair,
and she will be organizing this new effort. We are putting out a
call for LMTs who would be willing to act as a contact person. We
need contact people in Collier, Hendry and Lee Counties to cover
this Chapter area. The word will go out that a team of therapists
are available to go and give caring, loving touch to ease the
transition in near-death or next-to-death situations. The contact
person will call those on the list and arrange a mutual meeting
time to be at the bed of the person. Perhaps - who knows? - death
might be averted by such a team. If you would like to be on the
call list please call Robyn Berry at 239-939-4646 or email her at
<rbinstitute@comcast.net>.
Free All-Mandatories Day - July 25, 2010
Well, not quite free - it will cost you $5 for lunch. This is an
amazing gift to members of the Chapter. President Terry Lowder and
CE provider has scheduled an "All-Mandatories Day" on Sunday, July
25, 2010, in which he will provide the required 7 CEs covering all
the mandatory subjects needed for the two-year period ending August
31, 2011. This is taking place a year ahead of time so as not to
compete with the schools who also give CE classes. The cost will be
only $5.00 for members (for lunch). Non-members will pay $105.00.
Terry is donating the proceeds to our Southwest Florida Chapter. As
we all know, the benefit of belonging to FSMTA is getting CE hours
at chapter meetings. Last year the Chapter provided 26 CE hours at
the meetings. No other chapter has ever done that before. It's $15
an hour to buy CE's retail on the open market. Our dues are $125 a
year or only $300 for three years. We need 25 hours of continuing
education every two years on odd-numbered years (2011, 2013, 2015).
If you pay for your CEs on the open market you pay $375 ($15 x 25 =
$375). If you get your CE's at chapter meetings you pay $250 on the
annual enrollment plan (or $200 for two years on the three-year
plan). That's $125 to $175 less in real money. The All-Mandatories
Day will include two hours each on FL Law, Ethics and Medical
Errors, and one hour of HIV/AIDs. To reserve space and get on the
list, pay $5 at the next meeting. Give it to Robyn Berry,
Treasurer.
New member service: rooming and car pooling
arrangements
Member Debra Ziebell has offered to handle the organizing and
arrangements for car-pooling to and from the Convention in Orlando
in July, and also for room sharing while there. The Board has made
this a new sub-committee under Member Services Chair, Robyn Berry.
Contact Debra Ziebell <llebeizarbed1@yahoo.com>, or phone
239-694-0839
Notary service to members
Member Robyn Berry who is a Notary, has offered her notary services
to members of the Chapter for $10 per document, and will donate the
proceeds to the Chapter. To make arrangements, contact Robyn at
<rbinstitute@comcast.net> Phone: 239-939-4646.

Janice Jackson of Naples mails the newsletter to all members who
don't have email. If you know someone who does not have email, have
them contact Janice at 239-272-8539, or email jag.girl@comcast.net.
This service is, of course, only for current members.

2010 FSMTA Annual Convention July 7 - 11, 2010
Mark your calendar for the 2010 Annual convention. This is the big
day for massage therapists in Florida and is held every July in
Orlando. The convention used to be held in various cities around
Florida, but it was found to be more efficient to remain in the
area of the central office. There will not be a Chapter meeting in
July to allow everyone to focus on the convention. For a list of
presenters, room prices, discount opportunities, pictures of past
events and more, go to

Chapter Meeting - Minutes of Monday, January 18, 2010
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order Monday, January 18, at 6:28 PM by
President Terry Lowder.
Tribute to Ray Thaggard
The President recognized Sydney Sheaffer to say a few words about
our recently departed chapter member, Raymond Thaggard [January 27,
1931 -- January 11, 2010].
The opportunity for the chapter to offer an ongoing bereavement
support service for members & their families was briefly
discussed and was referred to the chapter board for
follow-up.
President's Report
Acknowledgement of BASS PRO SHOPS: The President announced the
board's decision to designate BASS PRO SHOPS as a chapter "sponsor"
to acknowledge their providing our meeting facilities free of
charge. Thanks to Ron Stephens for making the arrangements.
2009 Perspective: The President characterized 2009 as a "banner
year" for the Southwest Florida Chapter, highlighting member events
and CE opportunities in each of the 12 months. Members who attended
the CE sessions accrued 26 CE credits -- a record for our chapter,
with a retail value of $390. Plans for 2010 call for a new record
of 27 CE credits -- a $405 value. Ron Stephens pointed out that
these savings more than cover the costs of FSMTA membership and
insurance.
Board Appointees: The President introduced recent appointees to
Chair Standing Committees of the board: Sydney Sheaffer, Bylaws;
Nancy Wilson, Membership; and Robyn Berry, Member Services.
Officer Vacancies: 1st VP (Dolores), Treasurer (Betsy), Secretary
(Rita)
The President confirmed that nominations for 1st Vice President and
Treasurer will be closed at the close of today's chapter meeting.
Nomination forms are available for any chapter members who wish to
nominate themselves or another qualified member. A special meeting
of the voting members of the board will be scheduled to fill the
positions from the available nominees. Nominations for the recently
vacated position of Secretary will be received until the next
regularly scheduled board meeting on Thursday, February 4th, at
6:00 PM.
Treasurer’s Report
Acting Treasurer Terry Lowder disclosed the chapter's EOY 2009
Account Balance of $3606.18 as compared to EOY 2008 balance of
$4,700.96. This means that the chapter's expenses exceeded its
income by about 1,100 dollars. Extraordinary expenses included
Chapter meetings in July and August and an unexpected $810 PC
repair bill.
First Vice President’s Report
Acting First Vice President Terry Lowder acknowledged the huge
contribution of Dolores Gozzi in arranging the CE Speakers for our
2010 chapter meetings (See Programs Schedule on page 2 of tonight's
agenda).
Web Site & Internet Report [NANCY WILSON]
1) Two pages on the website are updated regularly: Chapter Meetings
& Bulletin Board. The calendar of events is posted on the
Meetings page, and non-calendar events are on the Bulletin Board.
If you have something to be posted, email it to me. My address is
on the newsletter. Photos are nice but they need to be sent in .jpg
format.
2) Soon there will be a Newsletter page on the website where the
latest newsletter will be posted.
3) The website is a good place to post special interest groups -
charity or community events, sports events, chair massage events,
like that. If you know of something, send it to me and I’ll
post it. If you have a new idea you’d like to pursue, let me
or Terry know and we will get it up there so others will know about
it. There are dozens of interesting seminars that could be posted
on the Community Calendar page, but we don’t have a policy in
place to select which ones to post and which not - there could be a
conflict with our sponsors.
Membership Committee Report [NANCY WILSON]
I have accepted the Membership Committee role because it is a
natural to go along with the newsletter and the website which I am
also doing. I am sending out welcome letters to new members,
reminder letters to expired members, and newsletters are going not
only to members but to expired members to keep them informed.
I’ve already had two responses thanking me and they’d
like to renew. The secretary‘s role has been a cumbersome and
complicated one, but over the last year Rita and I, working
together, began to separate some of the functions so the next
secretary will have an easier job of it.
Sports Massage Team [SYDNEY SHEAFFER for MICHAEL SCHMETTERER]
Sydney reported that 12 therapists participated in the annual Half
Marathon, Sunday, January 17th, at Cambier Park in Naples. Our
effort was dedicated to the memory of Ray Thaggard.
Annoucements of Upcoming Events
(1) Cindy Black, who gave a presentation on Anatomy &
Physiology in July 2009, is now a $100 sponsor of our chapter and
website. She is giving a 12 CEU class in Ft. Myers Feburary 26 and
27 on Acupressure Fundamentals and how to integrate Acupressure
into massage. There will be an article on this subject in the next
newsletter. Read more at her website:
www.LongLifeHappyLife.com
. Tel: 941-323-3493.
(2) Annette O'Dell and Jennifer Marshall announced an ETPS Pain
Therapy class scheduled for February 6-7th in Fort Myers. FSMTA
members will receive a 20% discount. To register call toll free 1
(800) 567-7246 (PAIN).
